As a rapid analytical method for both the types and activities of γ radionuclides, the γ-ray spectrometry method is widely used in the measurement of γ radionuclides in environmental and biological samples. The Gamma-ray Spectrometry Method for the Determination of Radionuclides in Environmental and Biological Samples (GB/T 16145—2022)was implemented on July 1, 2023, replacing the Determination of Radionuclides in Soil by Gamma Spectrometry (GB/T 11743—2013), Determination of Radionuclides in Water by Gamma Spectrometry (GB/T 16140—2018), Gamma Spectrometry Method of Analyzing Radionuclides in Biological Samples (GB/T 16145—2020), and Determination of Radionuclides in Air by Gamma Spectrometry (WS/T 184—2017). The background of the revised standard, the content and basis of the main revisions, and some issues that need to be discussed are briefly explained in this paper, in order to provide a useful reference for the detection of radioactivity in soil, water, biological, and air samples, as well as samples of similar matrices.

Objective To explore the differentially expressed mRNAs and related biological processes and pathways in fractional low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR)-induced senescence of normal human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells by high-throughput mRNA sequencing and bioinformatics techniques. Methods Senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining and senescence-associated secretion phenotype gene mRNA and protein expression levels were measured at 24 and 48 h after irradiating HBE cells 7 times at doses of 0, 50, 100, and 200 mGy, respectively. The differentially expressed genes were screened by high-throughput sequencing for Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. Results The senescence-positive area of fractional low-dose irradiated HBE cells increased in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.05). The mRNA levels and protein expression of transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) and matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) genes were increased in the 100 mGy × 7 and 200 mGy × 7 groups at 24 and 48 h after the end of irradiation compared with the control group. High-throughput sequencing showed that there were 882, 475, and 1205 differentially expressed mRNAs in each dose group compared with the control group. GO analysis showed that the differentially expressed mRNAs in each dose group were mainly enriched in biological processes such as cell cycle regulation, regulation of nitrogen compound metabolic process, regulation of cell division and response to stimulus. KEGG analysis showed that the differentially expressed mRNAs were mainly enriched in the pathways of cell cycle, cell senescence, and ferroptosis. Conclusion Fractional LDIR induced senescence in HBE cells, and differentially expressed mRNA-associated biological processes and pathways in senescent cells are related to cell cycle and cell senescence.

Objective To observe the daily bladder and bowel preparation of patients with prostate cancer by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and analyze its impact on the precise implementation of radiotherapy for prostate cancer and side effects. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 38 patients with prostate cancer who underwent volumetric modulated arc therapy. The number of radiation fractions for each patient ranged from 25 to 35. A CBCT scan was performed before each daily radiation therapy, and the number of scans for each patient ranged from 25 to 40. Setup errors were adjusted to ensure that the tumor was targeted and the rectum wall was not in the high-dose target area of the prostate. There were 93 instances where treatment could not be successfully implemented and re-preparation and re-scanning were required. We calculated the success rate of treatment and setup errors, compared radiotherapist-adjusted error values under different bladder and bowel preparation conditions, and recorded radiotherapy-related side effects. Results The success rate of treatment in the 38 patients was (92.14 ± 5.25)%. Among the 93 instances of seriously inadequate preparation, 48.4% were due to insufficient bladder filling, and 30.1% were due to intestinal bloating. Radiotherapy side effects were negatively correlated with the success rate of treatment (r = -0.393, P = 0.015). When bladder filling was sufficient, there were no significant differences in radiotherapist-adjusted error values in the left-right (LR), superior-inferior (SI), and anterior-posterior (AP) directions between adequate and inadequate bowel preparation (P > 0.05). When the bladder was moderately or insufficiently filled, there were significant differences in radiotherapist-adjusted error values in the LR, SI, and AP directions between adequate and inadequate bowel preparation (P < 0.05). Conclusion Insufficient bladder filling and intestinal bloating are the main factors influencing the successful implementation of radiotherapy for prostate cancer. When the bladder is sufficiently filled, bowel preparation does not affect prostate position change.

Objective To analyze the micronucleus rate of radiation workers and to provide accurate occupational health monitoring basis in radiation workers exposed to low-level ionizing radiation for a long time. Methods The radiation group consisted of 353 radiation workers who had been exposed to ionizing radiation during work, while the control group consisted of 41 radiation workers who had not yet been exposed to ionizing radiation before work. The cytokinesis-block micronucleus method was used to determine the micronucleus rate. Results The average micronucleus rate in the radiation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (t = -2.95, P < 0.05). In the radiation group, the micronucleus rate gradually increased with age, and the difference was statistically significant (F = 8.36, P < 0.05). The micronucleus rates of workers with > 10 and > 30 years of service were significantly higher than those of workers with < 10 years of service (χ2 = -44.79, -60.47, P < 0.05). The micronucleus rate in females was significantly higher than that in males (t = 3.93, P < 0.05). The micronucleus rates in the diagnostic radiology group and the industrial detection group were significantly higher than that in the control group (t = 3.51, 3.65, P < 0.05). Conclusion The micronucleus rate has increased among the radiation workers exposed to low-level ionizing radiation for a long time. It is necessary to further strengthen occupational health monitoring and radiation protection education for radiation workers, especially the medical workers that constitute the largest population of radiation exposure workers.

Objective To clarify the effects of 5G mobile phone radiofrequency radiation exposure on male mouse fertility and to preliminarily explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods Healthy male C57BL/6 mice aged 7-8 weeks were randomly assigned to Sham group, 3.5 GHz radiofrequency radiation group, and 4.9 GHz radiofrequency radiation group, with 16 mice in each group. The mice were exposed to 3.5 GHz or 4.9 GHz mobile phone radiofrequency radiation for 42 consecutive days (1 h per day). The sperm quality was evaluated using sperm count, deformity rate, and motility. H&E staining was performed to assess testicular tissue structure by observing the morphology of spermatogenic cells at various development stages, the diameter of seminiferous tubules, and the thickness of seminiferous epithelium. The sperm mitochondrial function was assessed using sperm mitochondrial membrane potential and testicular ATP content. The fertility of mice was evaluated through fertility rate, litter size, and survival rate of offspring. The underlying mechanisms were explored by detecting the methylation of LRGUK gene and its mRNA and protein levels. Results Compared with the Sham group, there were no significant changes in sperm count in the 3.5 GHz and 4.9 GHz groups; however, the sperm abnormality rate significantly increased (P < 0.05) and sperm motility significantly decreased (P < 0.05). The structure of testicular tissue, the function of sperm mitochondria, and fertility of mice showed no significant changes as compared with the Sham group. The methylation level of LRGUK gene in the testes significantly increased, while the mRNA and protein expression levels significantly decreased. Conclusion Exposure to 3.5 GHz and 4.9 GHz mobile phone radiofrequency radiation for 42 consecutive days can lead to an increase in sperm deformity rate and a decrease in sperm motility in mice, but has no significant effect on fertility, which may be related to an increase in methylation level of the LRGUK gene in the testes.

Objective To analyze micronucleus abnormalities in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of industrial radiation workers and the influencing factors, and to provide a reference for radiation protection. Methods The occupational health monitoring data of 661 industrial radiation workers were collected from the occupational health examination system of Gansu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The abnormalities in the micronucleus of peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed. The influencing factors were identified by logistic regression. Results The micronucleus abnormality rate was 6.05% for the 661 industrial radiation workers. There was no significant difference in micronucleus abnormality rate between sexes (P > 0.05). Comparison of age groups showed that the rate of micronucleus abnormality increased with age, and workers over 50 years of age has the highest rate of micronucleus abnormalities (17.81%); there was a significant difference between age groups (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in micronucleus abnormality rate between occupational categories (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in micronucleus abnormality rate between groups with different years of work (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that age and years of work were the risk factors for micronucleus abnormality rate (P < 0.05); age was an independent risk factor for micronucleus abnormality rate (P < 0.05). Conclusion The effect of low-dose ionizing radiation on micronucleus abnormality rate of industrial radiation workers is related to age and working years. Attention should be paid to occupational health monitoring of radiation workers, especially those with advanced age.

Objective To study the influence of the radius of the active zone of the plane source and the horizontal distance between the source center and the center of the detection window on the detection efficiency of low-background α/β measuring instruments. Methods The geometric factor was calculated under different conditions in MATLAB, and a traceable plane source was used to test and analyze two commonly used measuring instruments. Results With the other parameters unchanged, when the radius of the active zone R1 = 9 mm, the G value was greatest; and when the horizontal distance a = 0 mm, the G value was greatest. According to the calculation formula of the verification regulation, for the 90Sr-90Y planar source, at the maximum value of a, the detection efficiency of FYFS-400X was 1.2% lower, and that of MPC-9604 was 3.2% lower; for the 241Am planar source, the detection efficiency of MPC-9604 was 1.9% lower at the maximum value of a. Conclusion The geometric factor decreases with the increase in the radius of the active zone and the horizontal distance between the source center and the center of the detection window. At the central position, the geometric factor has less influence on the relative standard uncertainty of detection efficiency. When using a standard plane source for counting, measures should be taken to ensure that the plane source is always centrally located in the sample tray.

Objective To evaluate the predictive value of a dose-surface histogram (DSH) for radiation cystitis (RC) in patients with cervical cancer. Methods We retrospectively included 190 patients with cervical cancer who underwent image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) from the HIS system of The First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University from May 2013 to May 2023. The patients were divided into test group (n = 100) and control group (n = 90). The dose distribution in the bladder was evaluated by using a DSH for the test group and using a dose-volume histogram (DVH) for the control group. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive value of DSH for RC in comparison with DVH. Results There were no significant differences in baseline data and RC incidence between the two groups (all P>0.05). All evaluation indicators were significantly different between DSH and DVH (all P<0.05). The predictive value of S45 and V45 for the incidence of grade-I, -II, and -III RC was low (all P<0.05). The predictive value of S50 and V50 for the incidence of grade-I, -II, and -III RC was moderate (all P<0.05). S55-S57 and V55-V57 showed high value for predicting the incidence of grade-I, -II, and -III RC (all P<0.05). Conclusion DSH shows basically the same predictive value for the incidence of RC caused by IGRT in cervical cancer as DVH, which is expected to become a new tool for evaluating radiotherapy plans.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation represents a critical factor contributing to health risks in workplaces. Previous experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that ionizing radiation affects human health. Therefore, scientific assessment of health risk caused by ionizing radiation and effective protection against ionizing radiation are of great importance to formulate the preventive interventions against occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. This review summarizes the advances in the research on health effects, health risk assessment methods, and protective interventions of ionizing radiation. We call for research on the health effects of low-dose radiation, individual difference, and optimization of preventive strategies. In addition, improved mechanisms of health monitoring, periodical healthy examinations, and monitoring of radiation doses should be implemented. Moreover, strict compliance to operating procedures and occupational preventive interventions are recommended. These measures aim to minimize the potential harmlessness of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation, thereby safeguarding the health and safety of individuals exposed to ionizing radiation.
